Decorating a table for a Holiday

This table setting for the 4th of July may look like a lot of work but was really easy.  To do this:

Create a box of decorations for various holidays and occasions that can be reinvented.  Doing this will save you time because you won't have to go shopping for things at the last minute.  You can even have an instant party. I have used things around the house for themes, i.e.  ball caps, small pennants, books, dolls, "crowns", etc. for centerpieces.

Buy a few spools of wired ribbon that match your decorations.  It can be cut and tied as napkin rings.  You can also reuse it.

Invest in white dishes or clear glass plates. They can go with any theme or color, and they don't collapse or get soggy like paper plates. Use clear glasses and cups  They can be dressed up or down.
Use your own flatware.  It won't break. .

Clear glass or white plates are perfect for any event and can be found inexpensively at thrift stores or dollar stores.  You will save money every time you use them.  The cost of paper plates, forks, cups and napkins can add up and it gives you less to spend on other things for your get-together.  We have two Christmas open houses every year and invite all our neighbors, church friends and co-workers.  If  I bought paper products, it would be quite expensive.  The glass plates look nice much nicer.  I also like to use white cloth napkins that don't need ironing and can be bleached. It makes your event a little more special. They can go in the dishwasher.

That being said, if you want to use paper, stock up after holidays, or again, go to a discount store.

In the background of this photo, you can see an island made into a buffet. Inverted boxes of various sizes to make different levels for serving dishes.  There is a garland around them, intermingled with other decorations.

It takes a little effort to collect things, but it is well worth it.  The setting in the picture took about 30 minutes to set up because it was all in the cupboards! And my glass plates and cups have literally paid for themselves many times over.
