A Fresh Look for the New Year

The decorations are put away, the house looks bare and "tired."  There are several no-cost or low-cost ways to spruce things up.

Go through your closets and storage and see if you have any accessories that aren't being used.  Pull them out and use them in place of others that you are tired of.  Cant't use them?  Do you LOVE them?  If not, throw away, donate, trade or put in a garage sale pile or post on Craigslist.

Trading things with friends can be interesting!  Ask friends who's decorating style appeals to you if they have any things they aren't using.  You may be able to trade or get a garage sale price on some new things.

Go to garage sales to look for new things for your home.  Pictures, lamps and small pieces of furniture can be a real bargain.  If you love a piece of wood furniture that doesn't look so good, there is a possibility that it could be wonderful with some paint.

Another great option is consigning.  You can earn some money for some new things.  Consignment shops also have some great pieces of furniture.  My favorite retail store in the Atlanta area is Treasures Upscale Resale.  They are staffed by volunteers and donate everything above the operating cost to local ministries.

Try rearranging your furniture.  Move pieces from one room to another.  Reinvent uses.  A dresser can become a buffet, a desk a side board, an old door turned horizontally can be a head board or made into a desk top.  A window with wood panes can be turned into a picture frame.  Think outside the box.

Baskets can be used for holding plants, rolled towels in a bathroom, to hold remote controls, or in a powder room with guest toiletries (dental floss, small packs of Kleenex, hand lotion,  a small sewing kit and anything else that might be needed).

I love live plants.  There are many that grow with little attention and low light.  It can be an inexpensive way to fill an empty spot or corner.  I use all kinds of things for containers for my plants.  Teapots, ceramic bowls and decorative boxes work well.  If something isn't water-safe, leave the plant in its growers pot, place in a baggie and insert into your decorative container.  You may be able to find a liner that will work with your container.

Clippings from many plants can be used to start new plants.  They make a nice gift for friends or to add more to your collection.

Look through decorating magazines and look for ideas that you can incorporated into your home.  Be creative and get off to a good start toward your decorating goals this year!
