Fun Ideas for a Super Bowl Party
If your team won in the playoffs, you are probably looking forward to the Super Bowl. If it didn't, you will most likely watch the game anyway. Make it fun and get together with friends. Here are some ideas for your get-together.
Ask everyone to wear their favorite team's jersey or colors.
Balloons are always festive. If you have a high ceiling, let them float at the ceiling with long streamers of ribbon in team colors. Make sure that the streamers are are varied in length but within reach. (I have done this at Christmas and tied snowflakes on white streamers hung from white balloons. )
Tip: The Mylar balloons are $1 each at most dollar stores. You can reuse them if you let the helium out and store with your party supplies. You can also let your friends take them home.
Put a couple of Nerf footballs on the serving table. Use the sports pages of the newspaper overlapped, and angled in a crazy quilt fashion, taped together on the underside, for a table covering. Use peanuts in the shell for confetti. You can also scatter football trading card around on the serving table and TV area for extra color. You can use them to ask "trivia" questions.
Finger foods work well. Miniature sandwiches, sliders, pizza and hot dogs are great. Chili is always a popular choice. If you serve chili, you might ask everyone to bring their favorite in a crock pot and have a "cook off". Have a variety of toppings: chopped onion, grated cheese, sour cream, chopped tomatoes, hot sauce and oyster crackers.
Potlucks are easy but make sure you know what everyone is bringing so you have a variety of food. Be sure to let everyone know how many people their dish should serve. A downfall of potlucks is that someone may not come and you will be missing a dish. I prepare a couple of extra things just in case.
Dips, chips, veggies and popcorn are also easy.
Consider having a puzzle or a game set up in another area for those who aren't football fans.
Cookies, cupcakes and brownies are easy to eat. "Make-your-own-sundaes" are always popular. Have a variety of toppings like chocolate, caramel, nuts, sprinkles, cherries. bananas, crushed Oreos and whipped cream.
When your friends arrive, have them write down their prediction for the final score. Have a prize for the one who comes closest. The prize could be a football coffee mug for your local football team, a Starbucks, ice cream or movie gift card are things most people enjoy. Also remember to have something for the chili cook-off winner if you decide to do that.
Below is a dip recipe that can be served hot or cold.
Layered Bean Dip
2 1/2 quart round baking dish, grease with a non-stick spray if heating.
1 15 oz can of refried beans
1 cup of your favorite salsa
2 cups grated Colby cheese
1 small can of green Ortega chilis, chopped
1 small can of sliced black olives
Layer in order, spreading evenly. If you wish to heat, put in a 350 oven for 20 minutes. Serve with tortilla chips. This can also be placed in flour tortillas for a good burrito.
Note: If you use a square pan, use a 9x9; a larger dish makes the layers thin and the recipe would need to be doubled.
