New Year, New Goals?
"Resolutions" is a word that is almost synonymous with the celebration of the New Year. We want to lose weight, go to the gym on a regular basis, find a new job, spend more time with family and friends. The list goes on. The majority of resolutions don't last very long.
How do we decide what is important? God designed each of us for a specific purpose. It is ingrained in our souls and character. It is something that tugs at our hearts. It is far more important than temporal goals we have for ourselves. Those goals change or are forgotten. It is our god-given passion that continues Often it is ignored because we have goals of our own and we put what the Lord wants us to do on hold, with good intentions of getting "to it one day." Or we might be fearful that God might want us to do something that we don't want to do, like be a missionary or give money to the church. God just wants a willing heart. What He has for us is far better than what we could ever imagine for ourselves because we are His creation.
Since my late teens I have loved Hebrews 12:1-3. (NIV)
1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
A runner who looks at the sidelines or back may fall behind, stumble and fall or totally lose sight of his goal and the purpose of the race.
I learned a long time ago that there is no getting back to normal. There is no normal. Distractions happen every day and cause us to stumble, get depressed, and lose sight of what is important.
When you make your resolution for this year, I hope that you will consider the goal that the Lord has for you. It will be a goal that doesn't change, isn't to be given up on and can keep life in perspective, no matter what else may happen during 2012.
May you have a blessed year, and know the purpose for which you were designed, that you may complete the most important goal you will every have.
