Coordinating a Room

This guest room is decorated solely with mismatched furniture.  The paint, fabric and a few creative ideas make it work.

Sometimes we want to use an accessory and the scale may be too small.  Look for creative ways to make it work. The mirror and sconces over the bed were purchased at a flea market in France.  They were made in the 1800's.  The metal was painted green and the scale wasn't right for the area over the bed.  I improvised making it work.

I found a large damaged frame at a craft store, bought it for $7.  I touched it up and it looks great.  I bought a piece of foam insulation board from a home improvement store and cut it to fit in the frame, covered it with fabric to match the room.  I painted the mirror and sconces black and mounted the mirror and sconces inside the foam.  (I placed the nails through the insulation and into the wall to support the weight of the metal.)  It solved the problem and the pieces work well with the vintage furniture in the guest room.

This cabinet is in the same room. It is filled with things that would not necessarily go together. Putting them in the cabinet gives them a sense of unity. The christening dress on the side of the cabinet was mine. The cabinet fills a corner in the guest room.  The shelves are covered with the toile fabric and the checked fabric was glued in the front panel.

The dresser was from a country antique store. I left the drawers unpainted because the wood grain is a tigers eye maple and very pretty.  I placed a battenburg runner, a coffee pot and a wire egg basket lined with the toile and checked fabric on the dresser. The basket holds coffee mugs, tea and coffee and some snacks.

The chair was highlighted with black paint and the carved flower on the back was glazed with a burgundy and green. The cushion was covered with the leaf pattern used in the curtains. The night stand was a white cabinet that I painted black to match the rest of the furniture. The bed is a vintage bed that had good bones but it didn't make a statement. By painting it black, it became the focal point of the room

When you use several patterned fabrics, mix the scale of the patterns so they don't compete with each other. Many companies that sell bedding will sell yardage. I bought the ready made panels but made the valance mixing the patterns. The panel was shorter than I wanted so I took out the hem and added the checked fabric to the bottom.  Trim was added for a custom look.

I like curtains to "puddle" on the floor but they can just brush
the floor if you prefer.
The attached guest bath is done in
the same fabric. The shower curtain was
ready made.

The vanity to the right was white.
Black paint and new knobs were added to update the look of the bathroom.

A.J. Moss is the company that I used for the bedding.  It gives some wonderful options and they are pleasant to work with.
