Fall is in the Air (Well, almost!)

Once Labor Day comes we change gears.  Summer’s warm weather makes way for cool breezes, leaves change from green to golden hues and shades of red.    It just seems right to incorporate the colors of nature to our interior decor.

Simple things from nature can create a warm and inviting environment. Start with the front porch.  Potted chrysanthemums will bloom for months.  The colors are perfect for the season.  When Christmas comes, put them aside and plant them in your yard in the Spring.  They will “come back” next year.

Decorate a grapevine wreath for the door.   Cover it with pods, small pine cones and silk leaves or ribbon in Fall colors. Weave ribbon through the vines and leave small loops between the pine cones and pods.  This makes an inexpensive and attractive way to welcome guests into your home.

Pine cones scented with cinnamon look great in a pretty basket.  Place it on the hearth or in a corner of your entry.

An assortment of apples in a rustic container is perfect for the coffee table.

Candles in all sizes, in Fall colors, add a coziness as the weather cools.

Place a soft, fluffy throw or afghan on the back of a chair or sofa,  It is perfect to snuggle up in on a cool evening or rainy day.

Throw pillows with nubby textures in moss green, rust, red or orange can also add to the Fall feeling.  Note:  If you normally decorate with cool colors, such as blue or green, and don’t think you can use the harvest colors; try shades of salmon, rust, brown, burgundy or purple mixed with your blues and greens.

Stalks of wheat or birch twigs in a tall vase or bottle make a perfect accent for a corner.

Change your place mats.  If your dishes aren’t white or a solid color or won’t blend with the colors of Fall, give a cozy feeling with texture.  Look for woven or nubby place mats in a solid color that will compliments your dishes.

Use assorted shapes and sizes of colored and clear bottles in the center of your dining table. Place them on a tray.  They can be used as  holders for tapered candles or you can place a single Fall flower in each one.  Vary  the heights of each for visual appeal.

Replace some accessories with things in copper and wood.

Craft stores have some great Fall accessories you can incorporate.  Cluster gourds and pumpkins of various sizes on an end table or kitchen island.  Also check out discount and thrift stores for bargain accessories.

These simple things will work until the Christmas decorations come out.

When Christmas comes, put all your Fall decorations in plastic storage bins and label them for next year.
